Aug 28, 2024: Arctic Circle Trail in Greenland completed ✅ 8 days solo from Kangerlussuaq (Kellyville) to Sisimiut! Camped 4 nights and huts 3 nights.
I loved how remote, stark, and wild the Arctic desert is, with no amenities, resupply, or ways to bail once you start, except the occasional hiker hut to take shelter in on really bad weather days. Otherwise you can wildcamp anywhere, in pure solitude. Water is abundant and doesn’t need filtering. There is complete silence on the ACT, not a sound but your own breathing, unless there is a bird, and the birds sound insane, like coyotes. I saw tons of reindeer and an arctic fox! In every direction there is a vast expanse of wilderness, I often stopped and looked around and knew how “out there” I was, wondered if anything here had ever changed over millennia. I also thought of that movie Valhalla Rising, have you seen it? In the hard times I found myself invoking Odin.
The first half of the trip was pretty glorious, and then a descent into madness for the second half lol. Freezing wind blowing rain into your face, and the rain falling consistently all day long; feet submerged in bogs for hours, and hypothermic river crossings. One of the other hikers took shelter in the huts instead of pitching his tent even though he knew he was contagious with a respiratory infection, and got me and probably 6 other people sick. I hiked out the last few days with a raging head cold. I don’t recommend the experience of sneezing into a bug headnet.
When I finished the trail, I learned there’d been a polar bear sighting the night before, which I didn’t know while I was out there – but I was already way past that area of the trail anyway.
Lots of thoughts to process and post later about why this landscape speaks to me. I lost sight of something for a little while but I found it again, thank you ACT. (@ Arctic Circle Trail Greenland)
@thisbigwildworld So cool!! Love that you did this Claire!
@tomttake2 Wow! Awesome.
@alyannasyson Such a bucket list!!
@pedalpaddleplay Beautiful!!
@100peaks Wow. Glad you made it out OK. Sorry if I hyped it!
@thedetoureffect hype was worth it! Despite the challenges it still wasn’t as bad as I anticipated, I only had super wet feet the last 2-3 days, I thought it would be the whole time. And the bridge detour wasn’t even that boggy! Only one super deep water crossing up to my waist and the rest more manageable. The worst part was being sick 🤧 I think cold/rain/wind conditions during the last few days would have sucked less if I wasn’t ill
@100peaks Whew! I still wonder if we should have gone for the ford rather than the bridge.
@thedetoureffect some hikers told me it was only up to mid thigh, but I might be shorter than them so idk if it would have been fun for me
@jollyhobos What an achievement👏👏 I admire your courage and determination❤️ You are a warrior👍
@thedetoureffect thanks so much guys!! Was definitely nervous for this one beforehand but found my mojo once I was out there

@jtazhikin I absolutely found the right person to live vicariously through. Don’t get me wrong, I love my life but this is a dream!!🔥🔥
@thedetoureffect the Arctic desert has some similarities to your southwestern desert! No trees, low shrubs, desolate, can see all around for miles in every direction
@adventures.with.josie That looks like such a beautiful and amazing place to visit!
@ksneids How cool is this?! Mentally, physically and landscape.
@thedetoureffect even though I was cursing under my breath half the time, I think it’s the coolest trail I’ve ever done, really special
