Jan 21, 2017: The fact that the resistance looks like two of the strongest women in my life couldn’t make me prouder or more hopeful. My mom and aunt Genie taught me what it means to stand up for myself and never for a second think that I can’t do something, even when I’ve seen them both battle for recognition and equality in a world that is hesitant to bestow it to the most capable and qualified women. I’ve seen them forced to make sacrifices between career, family, and health that men would never be asked to make. And they’ve always maintained class and dignity even when those they were up against were hellbent on the opposite. If I can be half the women they are, I will have accomplished a feat. I’ve lived so much less life and yet already I often feel beaten down and resigned to the idea that things will never change, that the best I can do to maintain sanity is just keep my head down. But today as these two ladies march on Washington, still hopeful and demanding again that things can and will be different, and in witnessing hundreds of thousands of others standing with them in solidarity, I am rejuvenated and reminded of the example they never once faltered in setting for me. The example that women in general continue to set, again and again. If anyone is capable and passionate enough to effect change, it’s us, and now I remember that I know this. The future is female 💪🏻
