I introduced my Detour Effect button pins at the beginning of the year and shipped them out to “Pin Pals” around the world. After getting the COVID vaccine and doing a trip to the North Cascades where I lived and worked from my truck camper for a month, I decided to give up my apartment in Flagstaff and become fully nomadic. My first big trip after that was to the Smoky Mountains.

June 2, 2021: Testing out the truck bed camper set up! Everything I installed worked great and came in handy already, though I learned I need to make a few more additions. I listened to coyotes howl last night at this @hipcamp spot, and on my drive to go hiking this morning, I was just in time to watch hot air balloons go up 😍 (@ Sedona, Arizona)

@erictherichter Nice! We went to Sedona in March and had a wonderful time. Castle rock was an interesting spot if you’re into more historical locations as opposed to just sheer natural beauty.

June 29, 2021: My mom and I reached somewhere around 12,000ft today here in Colorado. Lots of steep elevation change for such a short stint 🏔 There was only one other group on the trail, and they had two doggies named Pumpkin and Bruce. Hiking and meeting dogs, my most favorite things all in one day 🥰 (@ Leadville, Colorado)

@sheoftenwanders Wheeew I was just in CO last weekend. I’m from alabama and that altitude kicked my tail!
@thedetoureffect it usually gets me too! I get altitude sickness pretty bad sometimes at 10,000ft+, I don’t know how people handle things like Everest!

@wandelgek I think it’s really cool to go on a walk uphill with your mom. We did this a lot as a family when I was much younger. Now my parents are too old for such climbs, but hope to meet them during my hill walk in some of the villages where I’ll stay.
@thedetoureffect I hope they can come meet up with you! That’s also a great way to keep you motivated on those tired days on the trail, to have encouragement from home
@wandelgek True and probably needed. I have been planning my long distance hike yesterday and it I found a trail which is brand new and is considered the heaviest walking trail of the Netherlands😍 It is so new that it has no direction signs yet. I’m gonna either enjoy this or regret this😂

@wandelgek yeah I never use gps because it eats batteries and I need my camera, but for this one I make an exception. I do have a guidebook with maps too.😍

@wandelgek True and probably needed. I have been planning my long distance hike yesterday and it I found a trail which is brand new and is considered the heaviest walking trail of the Netherlands😍 It is so new that it has no direction signs yet. I’m gonna either enjoy this or regret this😂

Aug 1, 2021: Truck living lessons so far:

– Working from the truck is better than trying to work from a yurt, bus, treehouse, or any other “quirky” accommodation.

– I need a better food system, I’m living off grains, breads, cereals, bars etc because they keep. Will probably get a chargeable cooler/fridge although I can’t stock it very full because I sometimes leave the car for multiple days while hiking.

– Sherpa GoalZero power bank kinda sucks.

– Verizon MiFi hotspot kinda rules, as long as I check the coverage map in advance before picking a place to work from.

– Never shall I ever forget my MSR Pocket Rocket at home again, I miss coffee.

– Camp hosts who don’t want to be your best friend are MVPs. Like thanks for the site I paid you for, but I’m kinda here with a plan, I don’t want to spend the day hanging with you.

– Should have brought a beach towel and folding chair.

– I will probably build a little folding table thing to work from.

– I’m starting to chill out now that it’s been a few weeks and I don’t feel the need to mad rush from place to place to fit a bunch in; just posting up somewhere for a few days is fine sometimes. In the future I might reserve ONE spot for an entire month and just basecamp from there, instead of running around so much. Financially it’d have to be somewhere that does a discount for long term stays probably.

I’m sure I’m forgetting stuff. I’m surprised how well the system has worked out overall though, I haven’t had issues with wifi dropping out while I’m trying to work or anything, or not being able to keep my devices charged, which were my main concerns. (@ Washington)

@thedetoureffect I work for a guided trekking company. I’m not a guide I just make people’s reservations on hiking trips. The admin part is easy remotely but I also take customer calls so I can’t park near people who will be annoyed by all the ringing
@unnamedadventures that’s a great job for on the road! Good for you! I wish I would have been brave a traveled by myself when I was in my 20’s. At least I’m doing it now with my husband. We have a new son so we are figuring out how to travel with him too. He’s almost old enough for hiking where he can keep his head up in a pack. I’m excited to see how that goes.

I ‘ve discovered funny things that way. Great that you’re getting into that too. I told some other walkers en-route what I was doing and all of them said they should have thought of that too😃
@thedetoureffect it’s a great way to enjoy a long trail without feeling like you have to crush miles and miss out on extra stops. When I did Hadrian’s Wall I wished I had given myself more days instead of trying to be a badass and do it as fast as possible; I didn’t get to visit some of the museums
@wandelgek yeah I guess itvdepends on what you wish to get outvof a walk. If its pure the physical thing, then by all means, rush. But there’s so much more and notveveryone wants only the physical reward. Photography andcrushing on iscalso a no go.😃

Then when you take the hair tie out you get funky curls lol. But you gotta keep the hat on or else the illusion is dead

Sept 11, 2021: I moved 80% of my furniture into the storage unit so far and for the next few days until I am living in the truck full time, it’s all about criss cross applesauce lol 🧘🏼‍♀️

Sept 17, 2021: How I made my escape:

– Found someone to take my lease
– Put everything in a storage unit, and sold some bigger stuff
– Got an iPostal address to forward my mail, at the suggestion of @travelonthereg (some other options don’t work for voting)
– Drove east, used freecampsites.net along the way
– Rented a monthly a coworking space to work from near the Smokies so I don’t have to worry about keeping my laptop charged, having strong wifi, or my electronics getting stolen out of the truck when I’m away hiking. This costs money but it’s less than apartment rent, and I park and sleep for cheap or free at night. Free coffee and they’ll take my mail 🙂 I do still have my wifi hotspot and charging devices just in case I need to work from the truck for any reason
– My gym membership works around the country, so I can shower there
– On my off days I’ll go hiking 🥾 And look for Jack White probably
– Figure I’ll stay for the fall and decide my next destination later, move on whenever I feel like

@thedetoureffect I use Anytime Fitness since it’s what I already had when I was living in Flagstaff, but if I ever go somewhere they don’t have a location I suppose I’d have to switch. iPostal gives you a street address instead of a box number so you can use it for banking etc, and they send you a picture of any mail you get. You can decide to have them forward it to you or trash it

@thedetoureffect I use the Verizon MiFi 8800L and I get the 30gb of monthly high speed. I check the Verizon coverage map before I choose a campsite so I can make sure the area generally has at least 4G

@rodney.d.rhodes It’s a great feeling being independent! My wife and I gave our “working for the man” a couple of years ago and retired. We own our permanent home in central Arkansas (paid off was a must), and hit the road with our travel trailer. By being centrally located we can go east, west, north or south, currently in New Mexico and then on to Arizona, and back home when the urge hits. Have plans for Kentucky and Oklahoma for fall and start the New Year who knows! What a great feeling

@tiltedmap Love it! It’s wonderful how easy it feels to not have stuff once you detach from it for a bit. (I just emptied a storage unit after a year, and could hardly remember most of what was inside.) Where did you start and where are you now?
@thedetoureffect while I was filling the unit up I kept thinking “I bet it will feel so weird to come back to this stuff in a year or two years”. I left Arizona, stopped to camp in NM and AR along the way, now I’m in TN indefinitely but will prob pop over to NC a few times
@tiltedmap for sure! That’s a great trip. I’ve been vanning around off and on this year, but never indefinitely. Now semi settled in Boston (as of about a week ago), but I have family to visit in TN at some point!

Swipe for a video 😭 though I’m sure Insta will compress the colors like always The North Carolina side of the Blue Ridge is much less crowded and garish than the Tennessee side. My hikes here have been in Pisgah National Forest and Shining Rock Wilderness. Some of these pics are from Tennent Mountain and Black Balsam Knob via Art Loeb trail. Some are from random pull-offs on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Later I’ll post Looking Glass Rock and Mt Pisgah. (@ Blue Ridge Parkway)

Oct 13, 2021: This view made me cry today, fam. Swipe for a video 😭 though I’m sure Insta will compress the colors like always The North Carolina side of the Blue Ridge is much less crowded and garish than the Tennessee side. My hikes here have been in Pisgah National Forest and Shining Rock Wilderness. Some of these pics are from Tennent Mountain and Black Balsam Knob via Art Loeb trail. Some are from random pull-offs on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Later I’ll post Looking Glass Rock and Mt Pisgah. (@ Blue Ridge Parkway)

@wherejoegoes6 It looks beautiful. With all your experience out west, do the Smokies feel small? I drove through the foothills of Appalachia Tuesday and it seemed like mini mountains!
@thedetoureffect not in moments like this, where they look so expansive. But when I’m hiking they feel small, I don’t really get too out of breath or anything. I feel like a god lol
@wherejoegoes6 That is hilarious. I can just imagine doing a hike in the Smokies after a trip to GC! 😂. I will say that some of the hardest hiking I’ve done has been on flat ground or slight incline. The conditions or a slight incline can destroy you physically and emotionally.
@thedetoureffect that’s a good point, or road walks. Give me a steep incline over flat gravel any day!

@doingwhatwelove Apparently, there are several “versions” of this show going around. The one we went to was actually called Beyond Van Gogh – Immersive Experience. It was so horribly disappointing from any perspective. One room. Not very immersive. Crowded. Noisy. Kids running around. Yeah… not our best use of entertainment $$$. You?
@thedetoureffect dang that’s a bummer. Mine was just 2 rooms and also pretty crowded. I still liked it but I did think too expensive for what it was; I had been expecting more of like a maze of many rooms to explore
